Day 1:Ivy Removal

We settled on Friday and drove over up to the house Saturday morning to start tackling projects. The whole thing was so overwhelming, we weren't sure where to start. We decided to start with the simplest thing- ripping the ivy and overgrowth off the outside of the house and the front porch.

We haven't had the electric services connected yet, so it was all loppers and hand clippers and shovels and brooms for this project.

In addition to the ivy, there were several extremely overgrown yew bushes surrounding the home- so overgrown that they grew to the roof of the porch and blocked nearly all the light coming in the downstairs windows. They also had managed to grow over and completely conceal a side entrance and sidewalk leading to it.

Initially, I wanted to cut these bushes way back and keep them nicely trimmed around the outside of the house. After spending some time cutting them back... I've decided the best course of action is to remove them entirely. With each of three bushes taking up approximately fifteen feet by fifteen feet of ground around the outer walls of the house, I think we would be better served to rip them out and fill in the space with colorful flower beds and small, pretty shrubs like rose bushes, hydrangeas, and camellias.

On day one, we managed to hack a pathway out of the yew to the side entrance, but completely removing them will have to wait until the power has been reconnected.
